The state of Maine is bounded by the Canadian provinces of Quebec on the northwest and New Brunswick on the northeast. To its southwest lies New Hampshire, and to the southeast, the Atlantic Ocean. It has a ruggedly beautiful coast, indented with plenty of natural harbors.

Maine’s proximity to some of the finest fishing grounds in the Atlantic has turned a good deal of its early settlers into fisher folk. Maine became an important shipbuilding and trading center.

Because of its great coastline and its abundant natural harbors, as well as its humid continental climate, Maine is frequented by vacationers and is a haven for artists.

The earliest settlers of Maine came in from western England. They were soon followed by Scots, Irish, a sprinkling of Quakers and Friends from the other New England colonies. French, Germans, Irish Romans, and French. The combined cultures of these early inhabitants make for a rich cultural atmosphere in the state.
