The state of Louisiana was originally colonized by France in the early 18th century. During this significant period in history, European and African cultures were introduced into the state, and resulted into the rich culture that it is famous for now.

Initially named Louisiane by the French colonizers, the name was later changed to Luisiana when the Spanish occupied the state. With the passing of time, this named evolved into the Louisiana we all know and love today. Other popular state nicknames are the Creole state after its early French and Spanish settlers, and the Pelican State after its state bird, and the Bayou state after its plentiful lush waterways. These nicknames are just a hint of what this state has to offer.

This state is peppered by a generally mild climate, with short mild winters as well as long, hot and generally humid summers. Its climate is one of the reasons why some people seeking warmth and sunshine choose to live here. Growth in the real estate market can be partly attributed to artists seeking inspiration and retirees’ seeking the laid-back life the state offers. 

In terms of population, Louisiana ranks 22nd among all of the 50 states, with a population of over 4.4 million people. Although rich in history, about 73% of Louisiana’s population is located in urban areas.

The state is rich in culture that is distinctly its own. Here, an astounding 32.5% of the population is black, peppered with Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians and other Pacific Islanders. Unique elements of the state’s population are the collective known as the Creoles and a minority group called the Cajuns. Melded together, it makes for a cultural hotpot that just explodes with flavor and artistic potential. And explode it does. Louisiana’s art and music is unique with its strong European tradition of classical music joined together with Creole, Cajun, and black music. The Dixieland Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz styles are very intimately connected with Louisiana, which was, at the turn of the century, the center of jazz development in the United States.

The yearly-awaited Mardi Gras carnival is one of the best known events in the country. Traditionally begins on Twelfth Night and culminates on Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras, which precedes the first day of Lent. People from far and wide come to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras, to be free, to express themselves, and to just be one with the unique harmony that lies in Louisiana.
