The state is largely an area of flat and gently rolling plains, and is flanked by the Mississippi River on the West and by a short stretch of Lake Michigan on the northeast. Where tall luxuriant prairie grasses once covered the plains, such grasses have been cleared in order to raise crops. The state is still known as “the Prairie State” even up to now. Illinois is also called “the Land of Lincoln”, having been home to one of the country’s most famed leaders, Abraham Lincoln.

Physical diversity is not lacking in rural Illinois. It has hill lands and a national forest in the south, as well as lush cotton fields, scenic bluffs and picturesque hillside dairy farms. Do not let the charming quaintness of rural Illinois mislead you, however, because it is far from being isolated from the urban Illinois. A dense network of railroads, highways, waterways and air routes are all in full use even in the rural parts of this State.

As the third largest city in Illinois, Chicago is in many ways the heart of the city. It dominates the industrial, financial, and social life of the state. Chicago overshadows other Illinois cities, such as Peoria, Rockford, and Decatur. It is a hotbed for business potential, and commands the highest real estate market prices in all of the state. Nevertheless, the smaller communities manage to retain their distinctive characteristics.

Illinois ranks 25th in size among the states of the Union, with a total area of 149,997 square kilometers. Despite its size, Illinois is ranked 5th among the states in terms of population, with about 12.4 million people. Its climate is characterized by warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters.

Chicago, apart from being the trade center of both the state and the country, is also one of the leading cultural centers in North America. It is the site of many of the state’s outstanding libraries and museums, such as the Art Institute in Chicago and the John Crerar Library at the University of Chicago to name a few. It is also home to some of the best developments in modern architecture, such as the Home Insurance Building, which was the world’s first skyscraper. The city is most notably a mecca for the blues, jazz, and folk music. Each year, the Chicago Blues Festival draws mucisians and music lovers for a 4-day event celebrating Chicago as the Blues Capital of the World.
