From the agricultural based economy with rural real estate, the county is now dependent on its technological supremacy, with its real estate now taking on a suburban image. Most of the orchards and wineries were gone after the post World War II development, and are now mostly concentrated on the hills above Silicon Valley. Post World War II era in the county has ushered in the technical-industrial revolution (The Silicon Revolution) which led Santa Clara County to the Space Age and beyond. The most distinct feature of the county is the co-existent of relics from its Spanish past and the new technological future unfolding before it. Santa Clara County real estate has become so diverse that a wide array of architectural styles can be seen around the county’s communities, from adobes to the Art Deco De Anza Hotel, from eclectic Victorian mansions to the 160-room Winchester House. Santa Clara California InformationLocated within the San Francisco Bay Area in the State of California, Santa Clara County is known as the home of the world-famous Silicon Valley. It was named after Mission Santa Clara (Saint Clare of Assisi), which was established within the area in 1777. The earliest known settlers of the area were the Ohlone Indians. The county was formed at about the same time of California’s statehood, making it one of the original 27 counties of the state. Parts of its territory were given to Alameda County after the latter’s creation in 1853. Santa Clara County has a total area of 1,304 square miles, of which 1,291 square miles are land and the remaining 13 square miles are water. The county has a population of around 1.7 million people living in an area comprised of 15 incorporated towns and cities, as well as 16 non-incorporated communities. The county seat is in San Jose. Santa Clara County is bordered by the counties of San Benito in the south, Santa Cruz in the south and southwest, San Mateo in the northwest, Alameda in the north, Stanislaus in the east, and Merced in the southeast. Santa Clara County has one of the most extensive and well-maintained road networks in California. It has an extensive freeway system and a separate expressway system. Unlike the expressways in most of California, the Santa Clara County expressways were built, operated, and maintained as county roads; they are not maintained by CalTrans, although they are still being patrolled by the California Highway Patrol. There is also a large street network dominated by four- and six-lane arteries. Newly constructed roads often have neatly landscaped medians as well as ample concrete sidewalks. Aside from the freeway and expressway networks of the county, it could also be accessed through its main airport – the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC). The Moffett Federal Airfield (NUQ) is a former Naval Air Station, now used by the National Air Guard and Lockheed Martin. There are smaller general aviation airports in Palo Alto, San Jose and San Martin. The county has no seaports. Like the other Bay Area Counties, it is dependent on the Port of Oakland for the transportation of its ocean cargo.
