It has a total land area of 965.7 square miles and a water area of 29.8 square miles. It has a total population of 1,223,499, 57.8% of which are White Non-Hispanics. It has a relatively young population with a median age of 33.8 years, an average household size of 2.64, median household income of $43,816 and an unemployment rate of 5.5%. The county is the eight most populous county in California.

The county was named by Captain Gabriel Moraga after the Sacramento River. The word Sacramento signifies “Sacrament” or “Lord’s Supper.” Sacramento enjoys a coastal climate with mild winters and dry summer.

The county is accessible through various modes of transportation as it has 36.87 miles of light rail system; three main line railroad tracks; an international airport and a sea port, It is also bordered by Interstate Highways 5, 80 and California Highway 99.As a current hub for highway, rail and river travel, Sacramento is connected to San Francisco Bay through a deep water channel, making Sacramento a major inland port.

It has 19 major public and private colleges and universities, 16 public school district, 26 public libraries and 10 hospitals.
