Monterey Real Estate

Monterey County real estate ranked among America’s ten most expensive counties.  This is a far cry during its earlier years when the federal government had to hand out 160-acre parcels of land along Big Sur for free in order to attract pioneering settlers.  Now, Big Sur is inhabited by the descendants of the original settlers, rancher families, artists, and wealthy homeowners from the worlds of entertainment and commerce.  The county’s real estate has indeed gone a long way from its humble beginnings.  This is largely in part due to the city’s diligence to protect its lands and its surroundings from uncalled exploitation, making sure it maintains its image of being one of the most pristine and spectacular places in the State of California.

Monterey County is a study in contrast.  Described as the greatest meeting place of land and sea, it has a breathtaking coastline and fertile farmlands; awe-inspiring beaches and sun-kissed valleys; luxurious real estate and vast open fields; Victorian houses and modern mansions.  Monterey County is truly one spectacular place to settle down.

Monterey California Information

One of the original counties of the US State of California, Monterey County boasts of one of the finest scenic backdrops in the whole United States, making it famous the world over.  Its pristine beaches and stunning coastline could be admired from along the coast itself or atop Big Sur – a thinly settled region in the California central coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean.  Big Sur is actually world-famous itself.  Stringent measures to maintain its pristine environment has been put in place.  Billboards and other visual distractions were banned from Highway 1 and new constructions were prohibited within sight of the highway along Big Sur.

Monterey County has a total land area of 3,322 square miles populated by 412,104 mostly affluent residents.  It is bordered by the counties of San Luis Obispo in the south, Kings and Fresno in the southeast, San Benito in the East, and Santa Cruz in the north.  The county seat is located in Salinas.  Montrey derived its name from the Spanish words monte and rey, which literally means “king of the mountain.”  It was named in honor of Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, Conde de Monterey, Viceroy of New Spain.

Monterey County is guided by its mission, which is “to excel at providing quality services for the benefit of all Monterey County residents while developing, maintaining, and enhancing the resources of the region.”

Wharves, farms, museums, county parks, fairgrounds, and trails are well kept for the enjoyment of both visitors and its residents.  These facilities offer an endless list of wonderful things to see and do.  History buffs will definitely enjoy hiking along Monterey’s Path of History.  Visitors and residents could also go tide pooling along the rocky shore, ride horseback along the vast grasslands, or indulge themselves in one out of many spas or resorts in the county.  Other popular recreational activities include swimming, golfing, biking, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, whale watching, fishing, hang gliding and sky diving.

Monterey’s wine country is also popular for its wine testing centers.  Here, visitors are able to sample the high quality of wine produced by the county’s very own wineries.
