Los Angeles California Information

Affectionately called “the City of Angels,” Los Angeles is the most populous city in California and the 2nd in the whole United States.  It is a world-renowned center of culture, science, arts, entertainment, and higher education.  L.A. is perhaps the world leader in entertainment, which includes movies, television, and music, which boosts and sustains its international fame.

Once inhabited by Tongva and Chumash tribes of Native Americans for thousands of years, the areas first European came with the visit of Juan Cabrillo in 1542.  It gained its township on September 4, 1781 making it the second oldest in the State of California.  L.A. was then named El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula (The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of the River of Little Portions).  The outline of the pueblo can be seen along the present day Olvera Street, preserved as a Historical Monument.

With the gold rush invading most of California, Los Angeles found a gold mine of its own – oil was discovered in its lands in 1892, and by 1923, was already supplying around 25% of the world’s petroleum.  As with any growing city, water is vital for its industry and populace.  To solve this problem, an aqueduct was built in 1913 and assured the city’s further growth.  Nearby communities without their own water supplies were annexed starting in 1915.  The motion picture and aviation industries came to Los Angeles in the 1920s, further developing it.With the annexation of nearby communities, Los Angeles has been generally divided into several major areas, which are:

  • Downtown Los Angeles
  • Hollywood
  • East Los Angeles
  • Mid-Wilshire (or Mid City)
  • South Los Angeles
  • Westside
  • South Bay/Harbor
  • San Fernando Valley

Through the years, people have been greatly attracted to L.A.’s unique, vibrant, and elegant lifestyle.  Los Angeles has a very lively night scene, with a vast array of bars, clubs, and lounges, with the more popular ones located at downtown LA, Silver Lake, and Hollywood.  With countless celebrity chefs working or residing within the city limits, L.A. is also a great location for exquisite dining.  The city is also very well known for its prominent shopping scene, especially along Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, 3rd Street Promenade and Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, Old Town Pasadena, the Hollywood and Highland Complex,, the Beverly Center, The Grove, Melrose Avenue, and Robertson Boulevard. In spite of Los Angeles’ famous “concrete jungle,’ it is still remarkably rich in native plant species.  There are many exotic flowers and flowering trees blooming all year round.  If there were no city in the area, flower growing would probably flourish as an industry.
